Non-Contact Respiration Rate Monitor for Cattle

KEIKY introduces the RemoteVitals range of products for non-contact monitoring of respiration rate in cattle.

Why non-contact respiration rate monitoring?

Respiration rate is a good indicator of the health status of cattle. The respiration rate of cattle is typically measured by looking at the cows flank and counting the number of respiration cycles per minute. This approach is very inconsistent and prone to errors. Various methods have been described in the literature, including counting flank movements for 15s, 30s or 60s, as well as measuring the time for 5 or 10 breaths and scaling appropriately depending on the method.

KEIKY's portable non-contact respiration rate monitor enables a consistent digital measurement of the respiration rate of cattle to be made using an RF technique which is safe for the device handler and the cattle.

Advantages of non-contact monitoring

  • digital monitoring of the respiration rate
  • provides more accurate measurement
  • non-contact technique reduces animal stress
  • reduces the user experience required to reliably measure respiration rate
  • reduces user measurement error
